Charlie Hong Kong Reduces Plastic

Charlie Hong Kong is committed to the health and well-being of our customers and our environment. Our precious blue green planet is our home. Serving locally grown organic produce, grown in nutrient dense soil, is an essential commitment of who we are. We were an early Certified Green Business because it was an important value. We’ve never used Styrofoam containers. In 2011, after seeing a photo of a baby otter on her mother’s chest, trapped in a plastic bag, we discontinued single use plastic bags. Thankfully the baby otter survived. When we learned about the unbelievable high carbon footprint, as well as the inhumane way beef is raised, we took beef off the menu. We searched but were unable to find a distributer, to supply pasture raised beef. It was an ethical decision for Charlie Hong Kong, with our commitment to the health and wellbeing of our customers and our planet.

Currently we are faced with a plastic container dilemma. During COVID plastic became ubiquitous for safety reasons. Now we find ourself in this challenging position of how to deal with the many plastic containers we give out for sauces. Remember plastic comes from petroleum. According to environmental scientists, petroleum is the number one cause of pollution and global warming. With our strong commitment to local organic produce, it’s a disconnect to continue to offer plastic containers for our sauces.

This EARTH DAY, Monday, April 22, to honor our commitment to the health of our customers and the health of our planet, we have made the decision to discontinue the use of the small plastic containers for to-go hoisin and chili garlic sauce. The pump containers of hoisin and chili garlic sauce will remain for customers to add to their food. Gradually we will discontinue the use of the larger plastic to-go containers. For a small fee, environmentally safe containers will be available. We are aware this is a big change. We are grateful for your patience and support. We are all in this together. To provide nourishment for our community is an honor and privilege.

Charlie Hong Kong has huge gratitude, for the ongoing support of our community through these 25 years.
